Established in 2001, the Dot NAME universal TLD is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained operational.
